Sober Curiosity
We all know that consuming alcohol has a negative effect on our health. So, it’s no surprise that being sober curious is on the rise.
Four years ago, our Founder Adam Smith made the decision to go alcohol-free and it changed his life. Listen to his story here. As a high-performing individual, he thought he had it all together, but his habit of using drinks to take the edge off was ruining every area of his life. Alcohol was causing him to gain weight, be miserable, unproductive, and overall difficult to be around. If you’re a high-achiever but find yourself stuck in a similar cycle, you might be “sober curious.”
The term “sober curious” describes people who are questioning their relationship with alcohol. They’re not necessarily giving it up forever but want to see how their life improves by taking a break. This is what Adam did, and the results have been transformational.
Why Sober Living Is a Game-Changer
The common misconception is that alcohol helps us cope with stress, but in reality, it worsens things. For years, he was using alcohol as an escape. It wasn’t long before it affected his sleep, skin, weight, relationships, and productivity too. As a self-development enthusiast, he needed to find a way to be at his best—and alcohol was getting in the way.

The Turning Point
The moment Adam shifted his thinking from “What’s wrong with a few beers?” to “What’s right with a few beers?” was when everything began to change. This simple mindset shift led him to see how alcohol wasn’t adding any value to his life.
For the sober curious, the first step is to reflect honestly on how alcohol is affecting your day-to-day performance. It’s easy to overlook the small, consistent negative effects, but when you take a break, the clarity is undeniable.
Key Steps for Alcohol-Free Living
If you’re considering alcohol-free living, here are four strategies that help:
- Habit Hacking: This is about replacing your current drinking habits with healthier alternatives. For example, instead of reaching for a drink after work, opt for alcohol-free options. With so many excellent non-alcoholic beers and spirits available today, it’s easier than ever.
- Find a Focus: Don’t just do “Dry January” or “Sober October” without a plan. Focus on fitness, friendships, or a new project. Alcohol-free living isn’t about deprivation; it’s about shifting your energy into areas that improve your life.
- Accountability: Find someone to go on this journey with you. Whether it’s a partner, friend, or colleague, having someone to share the experience with makes the transition smoother.
- Change Your Environment: Remove alcohol from your home and avoid social settings that revolve around drinking, at least initially. Engage in healthier social activities like going to the gym or joining a sports club.
Adam’s Sober Transformation
Since going alcohol-free, Adam has lost over 30 kilos, started two successful businesses, and transformed the relationship he has not only with himself and his partner but with every one of his friends and family members too. He’s fitter, more focused, and emotionally resilient. Alcohol was holding him back from reaching my full potential, and he didn’t even realise it.
If you’re sober curious, we encourage you to take a 30-, 60-, or 90-day break. You’ll likely find that alcohol-free living enhances your productivity, health, and overall happiness.
Give it a try and see how your life changes.
